HCA (NYSE: HCA) today announced the recipients and finalists of the 2003 Frist Humanitarian Awards. Glenda Humphrey, employed by Clinch Valley Medical Center and a resident of Claypool Hill, was named one of four finalists nationwide for Employee of the Year.
Created in 1971, the award honors outstanding individuals for their humanitarian and volunteer activities. The Frist Humanitarian Awards are given each year in recognition of the caring spirit and philanthropic work of the late Dr. Thomas Frist, Sr., a founder of HCA. Employees and volunteers who demonstrate commitment and dedication to care giving and humanitarianism are selected around the country and honorees are recognized at the local level. The two national recipients are selected from the local honorees.
The highest honor HCA employees and volunteers can receive, the Frist Humanitarian Award includes a $5,000 donation to the charity of the recipients choice, $5,000 in cash and $1,000 in HCA stock. This years employee winner is Nelly D. Cabuslay, a registered nurse at San Jose Medical Center in San Jose, California. As a finalist, Glenda Humphrey receives a $500 donation to the charity of her choice and $500 in cash.
Humphrey was CVMCs recipient of the Frist Award for employees, and the Rev. Jerry Welch of Richlands was the volunteer recipient. Both were recognized on March 2 during a luncheon at Clinch Valley Medical Center attended by their co-workers, family and friends. Twenty individuals were nominated this year by their peers. A nomination packet on each was forwarded to Nashville for the national award selection. A total of 224 nominations were submitted from around the country.
Humphrey has worked quietly and efficiently behind the scenes for years on numerous well-known projects, neither wanting nor expecting recognition. Most notably she has played a critical role in establishing Habitat for Humanity, the Good Samaritan Food Pantry, and the Coal Miners Memorial.
Our company has a long tradition of recognizing employees and volunteers with the Frist Humanitarian Award, and simply being nominated is an honor, said hospital CEO Tim Tobin. Many things have changed since our hospital opened over 65 years ago, but our commitment to our patients, employees and community has remained the same. The Frist Awards embody and celebrate caring, compassion and excellence qualities each of us strive for every day at Clinch Valley Medical Center.
